Chiang Rai’s White Temple Wat Rong Khun Written-off After Earthquake

Following a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in the north of Thailand yesterday, the famous White Temple of Chiang Rai has been effectively written-off by its creator.

The world-famous Wat Rong Khun, created by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, suffered serious structural damage during the tremor. Some of the remarkable murals inside the main building were destroyed when a wall and ceiling collapsed. Having spending 20 years working on it, the artist has said that it is past saving. Given that he is now 59 years old, Khun Chalermchai has said that he is now too old to devote another two decades to recreating it.
