Thai National artist Angkarn Kallayanapong dies at 86

BANGKOK, 25 August 2012 (NNT) – Angkarn Kalayanapong, a national artist and SEAWRITE award winner, passed away in the early hour of Saturday at the age of 86.

He had suffered from chronic diabetes and heart disease.

Angkarn was born on 13 February 1926 in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. He was graduated in painting from Silpakorn University. He has earned reputations not only in visual arts but also in literature. Among his reputed poems are Lam Nam (ballad) of Phu Kradung (1969), Suan Kaew (1972), and Nirat Nakhon Si Thammarat (1969). In 1989, he was named National Artist in the field of literature (poetry). He is succeeded by a son and two daughters.

A royal bathing rite will be held for him this evening, at 5.00 pm, at Wat Tri Totsathep in Bangkok, and funeral rites will continue for 7 days at the same monastery. His body will be kept for 100 days, before a cremation is arranged.
