BANGKOK, 21 April 2012 (NNT) – Phuket may be spared from dangerous quakes but the South is still at Tsunami risks, according to renowned scientist Smith Thammasaroj.

Mr. Smith, also chairman of the Natural Disaster Warning Council Foundation, disclosed that Ranong could be the next province to witness an earthquake as the fault there was long and remained active. An earthquake in another area could impact on the fault in this Andaman province, resulting in a strong quake.

Mr. Smith also predicted that a strong earthquake on Sumatra or nearby areas might bring Tsunamis on somewhere between the Andaman archipelago and the Irrawaddy Delta in Myanmar as well as in the Gulf of Thailand.

The natural disaster expert cautioned that the effects of Tsunamis could be widespread and severe.
