Cabinet prepares to promote Thailand as next host of World Expo 2020

BANGKOK, 7 February 2012 (NNT) – Thailand’s Cabinet has given a green light for Thailand to be dominated as the host of World Expo 2020 under the concept of ‘Globalisation : Balanced Life, Sustainable Living’.

The Cabinet has reportedly tasked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the responsibility of mustering support for the event. It is expected to establish a committee, with a Foreign Minister as chairman, to oversee the entire process and coordinate with related agencies.

The nomination of Thailand to host World Expo 2020 has become a national agenda by the decision of the Cabinet. One of the Deputy Prime Ministers will be chosen to supervise and work in coordination with all related agencies to prepare Ayutthaya province to contend with many cities around the world.

The government on May 16 last year submitted Thailand as a candidate to host this event. Other contenders include Turkey which nominated Ismir, Russia- Yekaterinburg, Brazil- South Paolo, and Arab Emirates-Dubai.

It will be voted late next year who will win the honor to host World Expo 2020. Thailand will have approximately two years to drum up supports for its nomination. The report further stated that Thailand is required to submit progress reports related to its readiness to host this great event to the BIE meeting— twice this year and once again next year.
