Red Shirts to hold anti-coup rally in Bangkok on 18 Sep

BANGKOK, 15 September 2011 (NNT) – The United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) is prepared to demonstrate at Bangkok Democracy Monument on 18 September to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the 2006 coup d’état.

Acting UDD Chairperson Thida Thawornset announced that the group would stage a gathering on 18 September at the Democracy Monument on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the 2006 coup that toppled the Thaksin Shinawatra administration. She expressed her wish to see as many supporters as possible, saying the event would aim to make a stance against coup d’états and to inform the world of their damages in political, economic and social aspects.

During the rally, Ms Thida revealed that speeches would be made on stage, mainly revolving around the necessity to revise the 2007 Constitution. At the same time, the group will call on the Government to double-check the petition signed by three million UDD supporters for royal amnesty for ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra before its submission and also to release 40 UDD members currently kept in prisons across the country.
