Beijing Police Stop Christian Church Service

Chinese police on Sunday detained dozens of worshippers from an unregistered Christian church who were trying to hold an outdoor service after being evicted from their usual place of worship in Beijing.

Leaders of the Shouwang church, a protestant group with about 1,000 members, had urged worshippers to gather for Sunday services at an open-air venue in Beijing, after the church was forced out of space it had been renting in a Beijing restaurant. But police, apparently alerted to the planned gathering, roped off the public area and took away people who showed up to worship. Television footage showed police herding people onto a bus.
