Artificial rain-making applied to fight drought in Northern Thailand

CHIANG MAI, March 3 – The first day of Thailand’s royal rain-making operation in the North is proving successful as drought-affected areas will be targeted as a priority, according to Song Klinprathum, director of the Royal Rain Making Centre, Upper North office said.

The timeframe of the rain-making operation plan this year runs through Oct 20. The first phase will focus on drought-affected areas in Chiang Rai and Nan, two provinces which earlier declared themselves disaster zones.

The centre is responsible for the task in 15 northern provinces. The rain-making operation on the first day was successful with rainfall as targeted. It is expected that 95 per cent of the artificial rain operation will succeed, he said.
