BANGKOK, 26 February 2011 (NNT) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is adamant that the government’s effort to tackle the southern unrest has been effective, though not yet satisfactory, while urging the public to continue cooperating with the authorities.
Giving a special lecture this morning at King Prajadhipok’s Institute, Prime Minister Abhisit insisted that the government had been on the right path towards the eradication of insurgency in the southern border provinces. Thanks to the imposition of various security measures, authorities have been able to revoke the martial law in many areas, such as four districts of Songkhla and Mae Lan district of Pattani.
Despite the dramatic decrease in the number of violent incidents, the Prime Minister admitted his dissatisfaction with the mounting death toll. He stressed that several restive zones remain difficult to control; therefore, it is crucial for local residents to lend the security officers a helping hand in preventing unrest instigation.
