Thai Army Chief Denies Coup Plot

The Thai army chief has denied that he is preparing to stage a military coup during the People’s Alliance for Democracy’s rally being held to protest against the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the Thai Cambodian border issues..

Army chief General Prayuth Chanocha said he has no plans to stage a military coup during the protests being led by the People’s Alliance for Democracy, or PAD, against the Memorandum of Understanding that was countersigned by the Thai Cambodian Joint Border Committee in 2000.

His denial follows suggestions by the Pheu Thai party list MP Jatuporn Prompan, who is also a red shirt leader, that the PAD is holding the rally to pave way for a military coup.

The army chief said the 2006 coup was aimed at ending the then political conflict, but that the present situation is different.
