Thai PM: No plan to reimpose Emergency Decree in Chiang Mai

BANGKOK, 11 September 2010 (NNT) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva confirms that no plans have been made on the reinstatement of the Emergency Decree in Chiang Mai province ahead of the upcoming anti-government rally.

In response to reports of movements by the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) during 12-19 September in various areas, especially Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Prime Minister Abhisit believed that the police and relevant security agencies would be able to keep the overall situation under control and that any problems would be immediately reported to the Government.

The premier played down concerns over the rally in Bangkok, citing that the city was still protected by the Emergency Decree. As for Chiang Mai, where the special law was recently lifted, he said the idea of reimposing the law was not yet in the plan but it would be considered by the Center for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES).
