Bangkok Delays Mandatory Pet Microchipping by One Year

BANGKOK – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has proposed a one-year postponement of the mandatory pet microchipping ordinance, originally set to take effect on January 10. The delay is intended to provide more time for authorities to expand service capacity and address several implementation challenges.

Bangkok to Enforce Mandatory Pet Microchipping by 2026

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced the decision today, explaining that while significant progress has been made—with approximately 50,000 cats and dogs microchipped in the past year, a tenfold increase from the previous period—hundreds of thousands of pets in the capital remain without chips.

Governor Chadchart cited three main obstacles to full compliance. First, the city currently has only about ten facilities equipped to perform microchip implantation, a number insufficient to meet demand. Second, many pet owners remain concerned about the safety of the procedure, indicating a need for broader public education on its benefits and minimal risks. Third, tenants living in rental properties often require landlord permission to register pets, creating an additional barrier to registration.

The governor emphasized that the ordinance will require amendments to accommodate tenants and to improve overall registration rates, which are seen as essential for controlling stray animal populations and ensuring responsible pet ownership.

Bangkok to Mandate Microchips for Dogs, Cats

The BMA will now seek approval from the Bangkok City Council to formally postpone the enforcement date. During the extension period, officials plan to increase the number of microchipping service points, launch public awareness campaigns, and revise relevant regulations to facilitate broader compliance.
