Thai Marine Injured by Landmine During Border Clearance in Trat

BANGKOK – A Thai Marine engineering specialist was wounded on Sunday morning after stepping on a landmine while conducting clearance operations along the border in Trat province. The incident occurred in the Ban Nong Ree area of Muang district, a zone recently retaken by Thai forces following intense clashes with Cambodian troops.

Thai Navy Uncovers Modified Anti-Personnel Mines in Border Area

The injured serviceman, Petty Officer First Class Thoedpong Pommara of the Marine Division’s engineering corps, was promptly evacuated to a hospital for treatment. In a statement, the Royal Thai Navy asserted that the explosion provides clear evidence that Cambodian forces continue to employ anti-personnel landmines, a practice it condemns as a violation of the international Ottawa Convention, which bans the use of such weapons.

In a separate development, Royal Thai Navy Spokesman Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaipan addressed reports regarding a Cambodian seawall. He stated that a private Cambodian company has voluntarily begun dismantling the structure, dismissing allegations that the Thai Navy had threatened to bomb a bridge in Cambodia to compel its removal. The seawall, built by Cambodia to mitigate wave impact, has been criticized by Thai authorities for allegedly accelerating coastal erosion and damaging the marine ecosystem along the Trat coastline.

Rear Admiral Parach noted that the Thai Navy had previously raised the issue through the Regional Border Committee on multiple occasions without achieving a resolution.
