Bangkok and Neighboring Provinces on High Flood Alert as Chao Phraya Discharge Rises
BANGKOK – The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) has issued a heightened flood risk alert for Bangkok and its adjacent provinces of Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi. The warning follows an increase in the water discharge rate from the Chao Phraya Barrage in Chai Nat province, which was raised from 2,750 to 2,800 cubic metres per second on Sunday.
Flood Crisis Deepens in Central Thailand as Chao Phraya River Swells
This strategic release of water is a direct response to heavy inflows from northern rivers, a lingering effect of former Storm Kalmaegi. The increased volume is causing water levels to rise significantly along the Chao Phraya River and its connected canals, elevating the threat of overflow. The situation is further complicated by ongoing high sea tides, which hinder the natural drainage of floodwater from riverside areas in the greater Bangkok region.

According to the Bangkok Post, the agency identified low-lying riverside communities located outside the metropolitan flood barrier system, often referred to as “missing-teeth zones,” as being at the greatest risk. Satellite-based mapping shows areas color-coded for different threat levels, with orange zones at risk from a 2,700 cubic metres per second discharge rate and red zones threatened by the current, higher rate.

Specific districts under close watch include Sam Khok and Muang in Pathum Thani; Pak Kret and Bang Kruai in Nonthaburi; and Bang Phlat, Bangkok Noi, Bangkok Yai, and Thon Buri on the Bangkok side of the river. Authorities are urging residents in these vulnerable areas to move belongings to higher ground and stay informed through official channels as GISTDA continues to monitor the evolving situation via satellite to support public mitigation and response efforts.
