The attack, carried out by an estimated 20 members of a Tai Yai (Shan) ethnic gang, occurred when Mong and his associates assaulted the victims with a machete. CCTV footage showed the suspects ignoring pleas from the victims, who insisted they were not involved in any conflict. Mong later admitted he mistakenly targeted the girl—who was wearing a hood—believing she was a male rival.
