Suspect Arrested in Chiang Mai Machete Attack That Severed Teen’s Hand

CHIANG MAI — A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a brutal machete attack that severed a 14-year-old girl’s hand and injured two others in Chiang Mai. The suspect, identified as J. A. M., was captured at the Mae Tha drug checkpoint in Lamphun province while attempting to flee to Bangkok.

The attack, carried out by an estimated 20 members of a Tai Yai (Shan) ethnic gang, occurred when Mong and his associates assaulted the victims with a machete. CCTV footage showed the suspects ignoring pleas from the victims, who insisted they were not involved in any conflict. Mong later admitted he mistakenly targeted the girl—who was wearing a hood—believing she was a male rival.

Mong has a prior arrest record for similar knife attacks in March 2025. He now faces charges including grievous bodily harm, conspiracy, and unauthorized weapon possession. Police have released footage of his arrest to aid public awareness and encourage tips about remaining gang members.

The incident has intensified concerns about youth safety and gang violence in northern Thailand. Authorities are expanding investigations and coordinating with local communities to prevent further attacks. Checkpoints and surveillance operations remain active as police pursue other suspects linked to the assault.
