Chiang Mai, July 6, 2025 – A two-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after accidentally eating 10 cannabis-infused gummy bears at a family birthday party, sparking outrage and calls for stricter regulation of cannabis edibles.
Thailand Reinstates Strict Cannabis Controls, Ending Liberalization Era
The incident unfolded earlier this month when the child’s teacher noticed her behaving unusually—drowsy, with half-closed eyes, and refusing food. After her uncle took her to the hospital, doctors initially struggled to diagnose her condition until family members recalled that guests at a recent party had brought cannabis gummies.
The toddler remained unconscious for 24 hours before being discharged, only to be readmitted hours later with a high fever and hallucinations. Her father, who shared the ordeal online to warn others, is now pursuing legal action against the couple responsible, demanding they cover over 50,000 baht in medical bills. Insurance refused to pay due to the narcotics involvement.

The father filed a police report at Hang Dong Police Station, submitting leftover gummies as evidence. He expressed fears about potential long-term effects on his daughter’s brain development.
In response, Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin ordered the FDA and provincial health offices to crack down on unauthorized cannabis-infused products. Under current law, selling such items without proper labeling can result in fines up to 30,000 baht and three years in prison, with harsher penalties for excessive THC levels.
