The head of Muang Udon Thani police station said officers received a report of the death at around 10am at a dormitory in the Khlong Charoen community. The student, identified only as Kanlaya, was found lying on her back on a bed in a second-floor room.
A preliminary examination revealed bruising on both arms but no signs of assault or forced entry. Medical personnel estimated that she had died one to two hours before being discovered. The exact cause of death remains pending further investigation.
Kanlaya’s 19-year-old roommate told police that the two had visited a nearby friend on Friday night. While the friend and roommate drank beer, Kanlaya reportedly consumed an entire 1.5-litre bottle of kratom juice by herself. They returned to their dorm around 5am.
Not long after going to bed, Kanlaya began exhibiting unusual symptoms — including eye-rolling, jaw clenching, and loss of consciousness. Her roommate tried to wake her and called a friend for help, but she was unresponsive.

Witnesses said Kanlaya had consumed kratom in the past but had not done so for some time. It is unknown whether she had any pre-existing health conditions. The kratom juice, reportedly purchased online, has been sent for laboratory analysis to determine its contents.
A full autopsy will be conducted at Udon Thani Hospital to determine the official cause of death.
Kratom, a plant traditionally used in Southeast Asia for its pain-relieving properties, was removed from Thailand’s list of narcotics in 2021. It is now regulated under the Kratom Plant Act. However, health authorities continue to caution against its recreational use, especially in high doses.
Large quantities of kratom can produce opioid-like effects and have been linked to severe side effects, including hallucinations, liver damage, breathing difficulties, aggression, and in extreme cases, death.
