31 people arrested smuggling cannabis from Thailand into Barcelona’s El Prat airport
New blow to drug trafficking in Barcelona with operation ‘Thaigreen’. The Spanish police force “Guardia Civil” has arrested a total of 31 people and seized more than 860 kilograms of marijuana over the course of a year at El Prat Airport from a new international route from Thailand.
The investigation began last year, following the arrest of three people of Malaysian origin between August and November. Those arrested arrived at Barcelona airport on flights from Bangkok with stopovers in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, and were carrying 73 kilos of marijuana distributed in vacuum-packed plastic packages, as reported by the Guardia Civil in a statement on Monday.
The ring of traffickers used passengers with no previous record and no apparent relationship between them who carried the drugs hidden in checked baggage on flights from Thailand.

After finding a pattern between the profiles and the routes used, the corps deduced that this could be a possible new international route. In one case, a man was intercepted with 52.5 kilos of marijuana from Thailand. A total of 31 people have been arrested, 24 of whom have been imprisoned.
