British Leader of International Cannabis Smuggling Gang Arrested in Koh Samui, 165 Kg of Cannabis Seized
In a significant crackdown on international drug trafficking, a British man identified as the leader of an international cannabis smuggling gang was arrested on Monday, March 17th, 2025, at a pier on Koh Samui. Authorities seized 165 kilograms of dried cannabis flower during the operation, marking another major blow to organized crime networks operating in Thailand.
Police arrest four Britons on Koh Samui for attempting to export cannabis to the UK
The suspect, identified only as Mr. D., a 30-year-old British national, was apprehended following a tip-off from a hotel in the Maenam area of Koh Samui. Hotel staff reported suspicious behavior involving Mr. D. and his accomplices, who had been storing numerous large suitcases in their room. Immigration officers tracked the suspect to a nearby ferry pier, where he was observed supervising the loading of suitcases into a van.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered 10 large suitcases filled with vacuum-sealed packages of dried cannabis flowers. The van driver admitted to being hired by a foreign national to transport the suitcases from Koh Samui to Bangkok. Mr. D. was reportedly managing the operation, even accompanying the van to the pier to oversee the loading process.
Investigations revealed that the gang initially planned to export the cannabis through Samui Airport. However, due to tightened airport security measures, their attempt failed, forcing them to alter their strategy. The suitcases were redirected to Bangkok, where the gang likely intended to attempt another export method.

This arrest follows another high-profile case on March 12th, 2025, where four British nationals were caught at Samui Airport with 144 kilograms of cannabis hidden in seven large suitcases. The drugs were destined for London Heathrow via a connecting flight. The Surat Thani Immigration Bureau confirmed that the investigation into these cases is ongoing, with authorities working to dismantle the broader network involved in these smuggling operations.
The seized cannabis, with an estimated street value of millions of dollars, underscores the lucrative nature of the international drug trade. While Thailand decriminalized cannabis for personal use in 2022, exporting cannabis remains illegal under Thai law. The arrests highlight the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating organized crime networks that exploit legal loopholes and transport routes to smuggle drugs across borders.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the full extent of the smuggling network. This includes identifying other members of the gang, tracing the origin of the cannabis, and determining the intended international distribution channels.
The arrests have drawn attention to the growing issue of drug smuggling in Thailand, particularly in popular tourist destinations like Koh Samui. The case also highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling cross-border crime and the need for stricter enforcement of drug laws to prevent exploitation by organized crime groups.
Stay tuned for further updates as the investigation unfolds.
