Thailand Seals All Cambodia Border Crossings in Security Crackdown

Sa Kaeo – Thailand has implemented an unprecedented shutdown of all 16 land border crossings with Cambodia across seven provinces, marking the most severe restriction on cross-border movement in decades. The sweeping measure, effective immediately, impacts six permanent and ten temporary checkpoints along the 798-kilometer frontier.

The closures have frozen operations at vital commercial gateways including Aranyaprathet-Poipet (Sa Kaeo), Khlong Yai-Koh Kong (Trat), and Chanthaburi’s Had Lek crossing – arteries that facilitated 95% of last year’s $9.2 billion bilateral trade. Early reports indicate hundreds of trucks carrying perishable goods have been stranded mid-transit, with durian exporters scrambling to redirect shipments through Laem Chabang Port for Chinese markets.

Military officials confirmed the lockdown aims to combat transnational crime networks exploiting porous borders, particularly scam operations and drug trafficking. “This surgical closure allows us to reset our border security protocols,” said Gen. Songwit Noonpackdee, Chief of Defence Forces. Exceptions will be granted only for documented medical emergencies and students with cross-border school enrollment.

The Eastern Chamber of Commerce has activated crisis teams to evaluate the disruption’s ripple effects on supply chains. Preliminary estimates suggest daily losses exceeding 380 million baht for small traders alone. Cambodian markets reliant on Thai imports, from packaged foods to automotive parts, face imminent shortages.

While border gates remain shuttered, both governments maintain communication through foreign ministry channels. The closures follow weeks of escalating tensions, including reciprocal bans on energy exports and transport restrictions. Analysts suggest the measures may pressure Cambodia to intensify crackdowns on criminal compounds near the Thai border.
