Thai PM Declares War on Cambodia-Based Scam Networks

Bangkok – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has launched an aggressive international campaign against transnational scam operations based in Cambodia, setting a 90-day deadline for concrete results in dismantling the criminal networks that have turned the neighboring country into a global cybercrime hub.

Thai-Cambodian Border Tensions Escalate with Checkpoint Closures

The Thai leader convened crisis talks today with top law enforcement and security officials to coordinate measures against Cambodia-based call center scams that have defrauded victims worldwide. The prime minister revealed border restrictions and digital countermeasures have already cost criminal syndicates an estimated 30 million baht in losses, but acknowledged more drastic actions are needed.

In a bold escalation, Thailand is considering cutting fuel and energy exports to Cambodia – a move that comes days after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet preemptively suspended Thai energy imports. The tit-for-tat economic measures highlight growing tensions between the nations over the scam epidemic. Existing restrictions include severed internet connections to suspect compounds and a ban on Thai nationals visiting Cambodian casinos, known recruitment centers for fraud operations.

Police Inspector-General Tatchai Pitaneelaboot announced Thailand will host an emergency ASEANPOL meeting in late July, bringing together law enforcement from all 10 member states to formulate a regional strategy. The summit follows disturbing revelations that victims from 36 countries have been trafficked or deceived into working for scam compounds in Cambodia and Myanmar.

Authorities report thousands of foreign workers, including Europeans and Americans, remain trapped in brutal scam compounds where they are forced to perpetrate financial crimes. The prime minister vowed to make their rescue a priority, stating: “These criminal networks represent both an economic threat and a humanitarian disaster at our doorstep.”
