Cambodian Group Disperses Peacefully After Stir at Disputed Surin Temple Site
A cultural demonstration by approximately 30 Cambodian nationals at the historically contested Prasat Ta Khwai temple complex concluded without incident Wednesday after Thai border authorities intervened. The episode highlights ongoing sensitivities surrounding undemarcated border zones between Thailand and Cambodia.

The group, comprising men and women, had gathered at the ancient Khmer-era temple in Phanom Dong Rak district where they engaged in amplified singing and dancing using loudhailers. Personnel from Thailand’s Suranaree Task Force responded to the disturbance, engaging the participants in dialogue about proper protocols at the sensitive location.
Army Deputy Spokesperson Colonel Richa Suksuwan confirmed the Cambodians ceased their activities after receiving what he described as “a polite warning” about violating bilateral agreements. “Our officers explained these actions were inappropriate given the site’s status,” Richa stated, noting the group complied immediately and departed peacefully. The spokesperson acknowledged the participants had performed symbolic acts but declined to elaborate on their nature.

The 12th-13th century Prasat Ta Khwai remains a flashpoint in ongoing border demarcation talks, with Cambodia recently petitioning the International Court of Justice for resolution. Archaeologists identify the structure as a significant transitional work between the Angkor Wat and Bayon architectural periods, built during the reigns of Kings Suryavarman II and Jayavarman VII.
