Bunkers Built Near Thai-Cambodian Border as Residents Brace for Potential Conflict
SA KAEO – As tensions between Thailand and Cambodia over a disputed border area escalate, residents living along the frontier have begun preparing for the worst. Villagers in Thailand’s eastern province of Sa Kaeo are constructing makeshift safety bunkers and reviving emergency protocols, fearing renewed violence after a deadly clash last week.
Thai, Cambodian Defense Ministers Hold First Talks Amid Rising Border Tensions
The atmosphere remains tense following a confrontation on May 28 that left a Cambodian soldier dead. While officials from both countries have engaged in diplomacy, many locals say they no longer trust that the situation will de-escalate peacefully.
Among those taking precautions is Wijit Intarasorn, a 65-year-old villager in Kantharalak district who lost a leg to a landmine years ago. Speaking while constructing a bunker alongside his neighbor, 71-year-old Satien Chaiyapakdi, Wijit admitted he has been unable to sleep due to the fear of conflict. “We don’t know when explosions may occur. If there’s fighting, we’ll need a place to hide,” said Satien, explaining their decision to build a shelter between their two homes.
Six official safety bunkers—last used during the 2011 border skirmishes—are also being reactivated at a local temple for broader community use. But for many residents, personal preparations have become essential.
Amorn Molaraj, a 49-year-old farmer, says the standoff has disrupted agriculture and livelihoods in the region. “We want officials to defend our territory, but we’re scared too. If war breaks out, how will we harvest our rice? We’re already living in poverty,” she said. Mushroom foraging near the border—a vital source of income—has also ceased due to safety fears.

Local schools have begun implementing safety measures. Jitra Kumphan, director of Ban Dan Klang School, said drills are being conducted and teachers have been assigned emergency roles. “Only after the last student has left the school can teachers leave,” she emphasized. While expressing trust in the military, she acknowledged the risks facing the community.
The growing anxiety comes despite reassurances from the Thai military that it is ready to defend the border. Some residents, however, are calling for dialogue rather than confrontation.
Suthien Piwchan, a former researcher who led a Thai-Cambodian community relations project, urged restraint. “I don’t want war,” he said. “Even if we fight, we’ll still need to talk and coexist. Future generations deserve better than endless conflict.”
He acknowledged suspicions of territorial encroachment but insisted that long-term peace depends on official negotiation and community understanding. “We are brothers and sisters, no one wants fighting to occur,” he said.
Thai Border Troops Encouraged by Massive Civilian Support
As diplomatic talks continue, including upcoming high-level discussions and a Joint Border Committee meeting, the people living along the front lines remain caught between fear, preparation, and a deep hope for peace.
