Brazilian Couple Arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport with 7.4kg of Cocaine Worth 22 Million Baht

Bangkok, May 6, 2025 — Thai authorities intercepted a sophisticated drug smuggling attempt at Suvarnabhumi Airport, arresting two Brazilian nationals carrying 7.4 kilograms of cocaine concealed in carbon paper-lined suitcases. The seizure, valued at 22.2 million baht, marks another high-profile capture in Thailand’s intensified war against narcotics trafficking.

The 26-year-old woman and 27-year-old man, whose identities remain withheld, were flagged as suspected traffickers prior to arrival. A multi-agency task force—including Customs Department investigators, Airport Interdiction Task Force (AITF), Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) and the Narcotics Suppression Bureau.

swung into action after X-ray scans detected anomalies in their luggage. Upon inspection, officers uncovered clear plastic packages wrapped in black carbon paper—a common tactic to evade scanners—containing the cocaine haul.
Staggering Drug Trade Statistics

Customs spokesman Phanthong Loykulnanta revealed the bust contributes to a broader crackdown: 800.67 million baht in drugs seized since October 2024, 140 cases prosecuted in the same period, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin among top intercepted substances.

Authorities suspect the duo’s arrest exposes a South America-to-Asia pipeline, with Thailand increasingly targeted as a transit hub. “This seizure proves our enhanced screening protocols work,” Phanthong asserted, crediting AI-assisted X-ray upgrades and international intelligence sharing.

The suspects will be arraigned in Bangkok Criminal Court within 48 hours. Meanwhile, the ONCB expands profiling of high-risk flights from Latin America.

“This isn’t just about seizures—it’s about dismantling networks,” said ONCB Deputy Chief Sirinya Sitdhibutr. “Every arrest reveals new tactics we must counter.”
