Residents Feel Tremors as 3.5-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Krabi – No Damage Reported

A minor earthquake rattled Krabi province on Sunday afternoon, sending brief but noticeable tremors through the area. The 3.5-magnitude quake struck at 2:27 p.m., its epicenter located in Khlong Khemao subdistrict at a shallow depth of just 2 kilometers. Despite the sudden jolt, authorities confirmed no damage to buildings or infrastructure, and no injuries were reported.

Witnesses described the sensation as similar to a heavy truck passing nearby—a sharp, high-frequency vibration distinct from the rolling tremors of deeper, more distant quakes. The Thai Meteorological Department clarified that this was due to the quake’s shallow onshore origin, contrasting it with the lower-frequency waves from the stronger Myanmar earthquake in March.

Officials swiftly ruled out any tsunami threat, reassuring coastal communities. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) also conducted checks at key dams, including Ratchaprapa and Bang Lang, confirming no structural impact. Even Srinagarind Dam in Kanchanaburi, hundreds of kilometers away, reported no issues.

As a precaution, disaster response teams remain on alert for potential aftershocks. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation urged residents to stay informed through official updates and report any concerns via the 24-hour hotline 1784. For now, life in Krabi returns to normal—shaken but unscathed.
