This marks the latest in a series of deadly crashes on Highway 304, a major northeast-east corridor known for dangerous conditions. The route saw another horrific double-decker bus accident in February that claimed 20 lives, following a separate tragedy last October when 23 students and teachers died in a bus fire on the outskirts of Bangkok.
Highway police are investigating potential causes including driver fatigue on the overnight Nong Khai-to-Rayong route and safety protocols for roadside parking of damaged vehicles. The crash has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of commercial transport regulations as Thailand continues grappling with its road safety crisis.
