Former Israeli Special Forces Soldier Busted for Running Illegal Tour Business on Koh Phangan

KOH PHANGAN, THAILAND — In a startling crackdown on illegal tourism operations, Thai authorities have arrested a 45-year-old Israeli man with a military background for allegedly working as an unlicensed tour guide on this popular island destination.

Ten Chinese Nationals Arrested at Construction Site in Phuket For Working Illegally

The arrest came after multiple complaints flooded the Tourist Police’s 1155 hotline about a foreign national organizing unauthorized excursions for groups of children. Identified only as Mr. D., the suspect was taken into custody on April 8 while leading a group of youngsters to Wang Sai Waterfall in a rented van.

Investigators revealed the ex-special forces operative had been running a sophisticated tour operation through a private WhatsApp group ominously named “Nature Adventures with Uncle.” For fees ranging from 800 baht per day to 6,000-8,000 baht weekly, parents could enroll their children in trips to various island attractions.

“This wasn’t just some casual activity,” said a police spokesperson. “We’re talking about organized groups of 19 to 30 children, complete with transportation and meals – a clear commercial operation that violates multiple laws.”

During interrogation, the Israeli national reportedly cited his military background as justification for his activities, claiming his special forces training made him particularly qualified to lead nature excursions. However, Thai law is unequivocal – tour guiding is strictly reserved for Thai citizens, with no exceptions or work permits available for foreigners in this profession.

The arrest has sparked fresh debate about foreign nationals operating in Thailand’s tourism gray market. Local operators have long complained about unfair competition from unlicensed foreign guides, while some expats argue the system leaves skilled professionals no legal way to share their expertise.

Authorities have transferred Mr. D. to Koh Phangan Police Station where he faces serious charges including operating an unauthorized tourism business and working outside permitted employment categories. If convicted, he could face hefty fines, deportation, and potential blacklisting from re-entering Thailand.

As the high-season tourism boom continues, officials warn they’re intensifying crackdowns on illegal tourism operations across all major destinations. “We want visitors to enjoy Thailand,” the police spokesperson added, “but everyone must respect our laws and the livelihoods of Thai workers.”
