Chinese Duo Arrested for Mid-Flight Theft on Macau-Bangkok Route
Bangkok, Thailand — Two Chinese nationals found themselves in handcuffs after allegedly pilfering cash from fellow passengers aboard an Air Macau flight in what authorities are calling a brazen mid-air theft operation.

The incident unfolded Thursday morning as flight NX996 touched down at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. Tourist Police officers, acting on an alert from the airline, swiftly detained 54-year-old Han and 46-year-old Wang after multiple passengers reported suspicious behavior during the two-hour journey from Macao.
According to Pol Col Seksan Thiraruangrit of the Tourist Police Bureau, the drama began when an alert traveler spotted Wang rummaging through another passenger’s backpack in the overhead compartment. The witness watched in disbelief as the suspect allegedly pulled out a plastic bag stuffed with Thai baht.
“These men were moving about the cabin suspiciously, leaving their seats repeatedly to examine other passengers’ belongings,” Pol Col Seksan revealed. Their unusual activity raised enough red flags that police were waiting when the plane landed.
A search of the suspects yielded damning evidence — 30,000 baht belonging to a passenger identified only as Trang. But the theft spree didn’t stop there. Authorities later discovered an additional 50,000 baht in the duo’s possession, cash reported missing by another Chinese traveler.
The arrest has highlighted a growing concern among airlines about so-called “airplane pickpockets” who target distracted travelers during flights. Budget carrier Nok Air recently issued warnings after similar incidents, reminding passengers to keep valuables secured at all times.
“This wasn’t opportunistic theft,” one aviation security expert noted. “These were calculated moves — waiting until passengers were relaxed or sleeping before striking.”
Both men now face serious charges of theft in a public place, which in Thailand includes aircraft cabins. If convicted, they could spend up to five years behind bars in addition to hefty fines.

As authorities continue their investigation, airlines are reviewing security protocols to combat this troubling trend of altitude-enabled larceny. For now, the message is clear — when flying, keep your guard (and your valuables) up.
