Violence in Thailand’s south kills 5

The latest spate of violence in Thailand has killed five people, including two soldiers, as authorities scramble to bridle the growing militancy in the restive southern region.

When two government soldiers were providing security for a group of Buddhist monks in Yala, one of three muslim-majority southern provinces on Saturday, suspected gunmen opened fire on their convoy, AFP reported.

According to police officials, the two soldiers were killed on the spot.

Meanwhile, police forces discovered the bodies of two unidentified men, who had apparently been slashed to death in a nearby town.
