Thai mobile firms to launch number portability, but not in September
MNP testing from Sept, but won’t meet state deadline
Mobile number portability (MNP) systems will begin testing in Thailand by 1 September, according to a statement from Clearing House for Number Portability Co, a joint venture of five mobile operators – AIS, DTAC, True, CAT and TOT – quoted by newspaper The Nation. Commercial MNP services could be fully up and running by December 2010, Premon Pinsakul, chairman of Clearing House, said yesterday, based on a roughly typical testing period of four months in other countries. However, the operators have been warned by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) that they will be fined per day for failing to meet the official 1 September deadline to begin offering MNP services to customers.
