Democrat triumphs in Bangkok city-district council polls
BANGKOK, 30 August 2010 (NNT) – The ruling Democrat Party has cemented its status in the capital, sweeping 46 out of 61 seats in both Bangkok city and district council elections on Sunday, while the opposition Pheu Thai Party has managed to grab 14 seats in its strongholds.
In the Bangkok city council election, the ruling Democrat Party grabbed 46 seats, while the opposition Pheu Thai Party seized 14 seats. Independent candidate won one seat while the New Politics Party of the People’s Alliance for Democracy came up empty-handed.
1,703,206 people cast their votes in one of the lowest turnouts in the capital’s history. The number of people who exercised their rights accounted for only 41.15 % of the number of eligible voters of 4,139,075 people. It was even lower than the previous city election which saw only 41.94% voter turnout. The ballot-counting processes were completed at 4.00 a.m. this morning.
