Cambodia Fails to Secure UN Backing as Border Tensions With Thailand Persist

UNITED NATIONS — Cambodia’s bid to rally international support for its border conflict with Thailand hit a roadblock Friday after the UN Security Council declined to adopt its proposed resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and fact-finding mission. The emergency session, convened at Phnom Penh’s request, concluded without formal action as members urged regional solutions instead.

Thai Ambassador Cherdchai Chaivaivid told Thai PBS World that Cambodia’s proposals—which included referring the dispute to the International Court of Justice—were dismissed without debate. “The proposal doesn’t make sense,” he asserted, emphasizing that bilateral mechanisms remain the appropriate channel. The 15-member council instead issued informal recommendations for de-escalation, with multiple diplomats characterizing the clashes as localized rather than a global security threat.

The closed-door meeting revealed diverging narratives. Cambodian Ambassador Chhea Keo, speaking to Deutsche Welle, accused Thailand of disproportionate force and reiterated demands for an unconditional ceasefire. “How can a smaller country like Cambodia provoke fighting?” he questioned, referencing Thailand’s military superiority.

While the Council encouraged ASEAN-led mediation, hopes for swift UN intervention dimmed. Ambassador Cherdchai noted the body is unlikely to revisit the issue unless violence escalates dramatically. The stalemate leaves thousands of displaced civilians in limbo as artillery duels continue along contested border zones.
