Thailand tries Spaniard Daniel Sancho for the murder of Edwin Arrieta

The trial of chef Daniel Sancho has started this Tuesday after allegedly having murdered Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta last August 2 on the Thai island of Koh Phangan. Juan Gonzalo Ospina, one of the lawyers defending Edwin Arrieta, has assured after the first hours of the trial that Sancho “has not shown any sense of regret” and that he has been seen “very confident”. In addition, he also indicated that the image of the accused, chained hand and foot, “it was shocking”.

Spanish chef Daniel Sancho pleads not guilty to murder of Edwin Arrieta

The Prosecutor’s Office of Thailand is requesting the death penalty for the Spaniard, accused of the premeditated murder, dismemberment and concealment of the body of the Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta. In addition, Sancho also faces a charge of destruction of legal documents of the belonging to the Colombian.

Many media outlets have traveled to Thailand to cover the trial sessions. In this way, one of Spanish TV reporters has highlighted that Sancho’s mother Silvia Bronchalo, has not gone to the courtroom this Tuesday, although she is in Koh Samui.

Who has accompanied Daniel during this first session of the trial has been his father, Rodolfo Sancho. Reporter Álvaro López pointed out that the accused himself was able to ask questions to the witnesses, something that is not even contemplated in his country, Spain.

“Regarding Daniel Sancho’s questions to witnesses is that, on certain occasions, if requested by the defense, the defendant can even take the floor to witnesses,” said the reporter of another Spanish media.

In addition, the journalist pointed out that Daniel Sancho “has asked so many questions, with inappropriate questions, that the judge has had to call his attention”: “A woman who works at the landfill where Edwin’s remains were found and the woman who rented the motorcycle to Sancho have testified”.

“The statement of the person who rented him the motorcycle is important because when you go to rent one, you have to leave either a bond or the passport. In the case of Daniel Sancho, he left the passport and the defense says that this piece of information is important because someone who leaves this document in a store would not be hiding anything,” added a journalist.
