Tsunami warning in Japan and Russia following 7.5 magnitude earthquake

UPDATE: Japan lifts tsunami warnings.

Japanese authorities on Monday activated a tsunami alert warning of waves of up to five metres along its western coastline after several dozen earthquakes, the strongest of which was a 7.5-magnitude quake in Ishikawa prefecture in the centre of the country’s main island of Honshu off the coast of the Sea of Japan.

Fumio Kishida, Japan’s prime minister, has convened a crisis cabinet over the biggest quake in decades and called on local residents to immediately evacuate areas near the sea.

The Russian authorities have also issued a tsunami warning for the western coast of Sakhalin, where an evacuation is underway.

The first waves in Japan, with a height of 1.20 metres, reached the town of Wajima, some 500 kilometres west of Tokyo at around 16.21 local time (08.21 in Spain). Authorities warn that torrents of water could reach up to 5 metres high and people have been urged to flee to higher ground or to the top of a nearby building as quickly as possible.

The images coming out of Japan are of cracked roads and houses toppled by the tremors, and cities without electricity, rail and aviation connections. Nuclear power plants in the area have suffered damage and spills, but the authorities have ruled out serious damage. An earthquake and tsunami struck northeast Japan on 11 March 2011, killing 18,000 people.
