Wat Sothon Wararam Woraviharn (วัดโสธรวรารามวรวิหาร) originally called Wat Hong is the oldest temple in Chachoengsao, a province in central Thailand. It is situated on the river bank, about 2 kilometers from the City Hall of the town.
This Buddhist temple was built during the reign of King Narai the Great in the late Ayutthaya period and is well known for the Luang Por Sothorn Buddha (วัดหลวงพ่อโสธร) also known as Phra Phutthasothon, one of most famous Buddhas in Thailand and the symbol of Chachoengsao. The Buddha image in the attitude of meditation has a width of 1.65 meters and height of 1.48 meters.
Worshippers and devotees all over the country pay high respect to this temple due to the miraculous events attributed to Luang Por Sothorn Buddha statue. It is said that this image protects and cares for health, safety and will help result in pregnancy.
Wat Sothon Wararam Woraviharn houses magnificent hand-painted murals representing the story of Sithandon Ocean and the Brahma universe with the position of the stars on the ceiling.
This monastery is open from 7 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays and 7 am to 5 pm on weekends and public holidays.
