Thailand gets first female prime minister

BANGKOK, Aug 5 – Thailand’s House of Representatives voted 296-3 for Yingluck Shinawatra, a top-party list Pheu Thai MP and sister of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, to become Thailand’s first female prime minister.

There were 197 abstentions.

The vote in the 500-seat lower chamber of Parliament came a month after her Pheu Thai party won a convincing majority in the July 3 election. It formed a six-party coalition controlling 300 seats in the 500-seat House.
