Thai Defense Minister dismisses coup rumor upon PM´s absence

BANGKOK, 23 September 2010 (NNT) – Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan has dismissed any rumored attempt to orchestrate coup d’état during the current overseas mission of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in the US.

Asked if any military coup d’état will be staged upon Prime Minister Abhisit’s visit to the US to participate in the UN General Assembly since 22 September 2010 or not, General Prawit said he does not think there should be such an incident in the country once again.

Ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted in 2006 by 19 Sep coup d’état while he was in his mission in the US to attend the similar UN General Assembly. As for now, Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs Suthep Thaugsuban is in charge of taking overall domestic situation.
