Of course I will wait for you……. don’t forget to send the money!……..

I have resided in Thailand for just about 5 years now, but I am still astonished at how inexperienced many tourists can be when they visit this wonderful country!.

This is how the story goes….the usual eventuality is that a foreign man arrives in one of the beach resorts where he meets a beautiful Thai girl/woman – typically in the setting of a bar.

They can hardly communicate, but the man becomes certain that he has found his perfect match in life. The “romance of a lifetime” runs the full course of his holiday & eventually he has to return home, with promises that he will return to her shortly & whilst she is “waiting for him” he will send her money regularly to help her.

Later it transpires that he’s not the only one sending her money, and that she is indeed actually already married!. The person gets angry and for years afterwards feels bitterness & resentment towards the people of Thailand for this cunning & devious trick that he fell for.

Well, the reality is that this wasted cash luxuriously frivolled on the Thai girl should actually be considered as a kind of idiot-tax!
