Bangkok Unveils Design for First Pedestrian-Only Bridge Over Chao Phraya River

BANGKOK – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has unveiled the proposed model for the city’s first dedicated pedestrian bridge spanning the Chao Phraya River. The ambitious project is designed to improve cross-river connectivity and establish a new architectural landmark for residents and tourists.

Bangkok Opens New Chao Phraya Bridge to Pedestrians

The bridge features a contemporary golden lattice structure with a central garden area for public relaxation and scenic viewing. Its intricate metalwork design aims to blend functionality with aesthetic appeal, offering a unique vantage point over Bangkok’s iconic waterway.

Currently, pedestrian movement across the Chao Phraya depends largely on vehicle bridges and ferry services. The new bridge is intended to enhance walkability and accessibility, particularly between the Chiang Mai Road and Songwat Road areas—linking to the historic Songwat neighborhood near Yaowarat (Chinatown), which has seen growing tourism in recent years.

The BMA emphasized that the project remains in an early exploratory phase, facing several logistical and regulatory challenges. Key considerations include navigating the densely developed riverfront, acquiring necessary land, and ensuring the bridge’s design does not obstruct existing river traffic, including passenger ferries, cargo vessels, and tourist boats.

Public reaction following the design reveal has been mixed, with many expressing excitement over the bridge’s potential as a new attraction, while others have raised concerns about construction costs, long-term maintenance, and overall feasibility. The BMA has acknowledged calls for detailed feasibility studies, budget transparency, and thorough maintenance planning.

New Chao Phraya Bridge Scheduled to Open in 2023

Before advancing, the project will require a public referendum to gather input, particularly from residents and businesses along the riverbanks. If approved, the pedestrian bridge could mark a significant step in rethinking urban mobility and public space along Bangkok’s most storied river.
