Thai Government Plans to Lift Alcohol Sales Restrictions and Extend Nightlife Hours

BANGKOK – In a significant policy shift aimed at boosting tourism and state revenue, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed relevant agencies to lift zoning restrictions on alcohol sales and extend operating hours for entertainment venues nationwide. The proposed changes would allow nightlife establishments to remain open until 4 AM, two hours beyond the current nationwide closing time of 2 AM.

Thailand Lifts Decades-Old Afternoon Alcohol Ban to Boost Tourism and Economy

According to a Government House source, the decision emerged from Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting where Anutin instructed the Interior Ministry and Public Health Ministry to collaborate on regulatory revisions. The comprehensive reform package includes abolishing the current zoning system for alcohol sales and lifting the longstanding ban on alcohol sales between 2 PM and 5 PM. The government aims to implement these changes by January 2026, ahead of the anticipated dissolution of Parliament.

The proposed measures would significantly simplify business operations by replacing the current licensing system for entertainment venues with a more straightforward registration process. Officials estimate the combined reforms could generate hundreds of billions of baht in additional tax revenue. Currently, extended operating hours until 4 AM are only permitted in specific areas including Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui, as well as entertainment venues located within hotels nationwide.

The regulatory changes would require amendments to ministerial regulations under both the Interior Ministry and Public Health Ministry, which holds jurisdiction over alcoholic beverage control. In Bangkok alone, data from district offices shows 207 licensed entertainment venues operating across 33 districts, with 73 located within currently designated zones and 134 outside them, including 24 hotel-based establishments.

If implemented as planned, the removal of geographic restrictions would enable businesses across Thailand to operate more freely, potentially stimulating nightlife-driven tourism throughout the country. The concerned ministries are now expected to finalize the necessary regulatory amendments to ensure the new framework takes effect early next year.
