Six Thai Regional Airports Raise Service Charges to Fund New Technology
THAILAND – The Department of Airports has implemented a uniform increase in the passenger service charge at six of its regional airports, affecting all outbound travelers. The adjustment, which adds 25 baht to both domestic and international fares, is directly linked to new technological upgrades aimed at modernizing the passenger experience.

The affected airports include Krabi, Surat Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phitsanulok. With this change, the fee for international travelers has risen from 400 to 425 baht, while the domestic charge has increased from 50 to 75 baht. The revised charge is automatically included in the ticket price and has been reflected in airline bookings since the change took effect on Wednesday.

According to the Department of Airports, the revenue from the fee hike will support recently installed systems designed to streamline airport processes. These investments include automated boarding pass scanners, self-service check-in kiosks, and self-service baggage drop facilities, which allow passengers to manage their luggage without queueing for a traditional check-in counter.

Aviation experts suggest that the modest fee increase reflects a global trend of airports integrating technology to improve operational efficiency and passenger convenience. However, the move has been met with mixed reactions, with some travelers expressing concern over the accumulating costs of air travel amidst other existing fees and charges. The Department is expected to monitor the performance of the new systems and passenger feedback, potentially setting a precedent for similar technological upgrades and corresponding fee adjustments at other regional airports in the future.
