TMD Warns of Widespread Heavy Rain and Rough Seas as Typhoon Ragasa Approaches

BANGKOK – The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather advisory for the period of September 23 to 26, warning of widespread heavy rain and rough marine conditions as Typhoon Ragasa moves across the region. As of September 22, the typhoon was located over the South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of approximately 205 kilometers per hour, moving westward at a speed of 20 km/h.

According to the forecast, Typhoon Ragasa is expected to pass near Hong Kong, cross southern China and Hainan Island, and enter the Gulf of Tonkin on September 25. The system is projected to weaken into a tropical storm before making landfall in northern Vietnam. By September 26, it is forecast to rapidly dissipate under the influence of a cold air mass from China. While the storm will not directly hit Thailand, its influence will intensify existing weather patterns across the country.

The TMD indicated that the typhoon will strengthen the monsoon trough over the northern and upper northeastern parts of Thailand, as well as the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. This interaction is expected to bring widespread rain, with heavy to very heavy downpours predicted for the North, Northeast, Central, and Eastern regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity. Officials have warned residents in risk areas to be vigilant for potential dangers, including flash floods and river overflows, particularly in foothill areas, low-lying zones, and urban areas susceptible to water accumulation.

Mariners have also been advised to exercise extreme caution. The Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are expected to experience waves reaching 2 to 3 meters in height, surpassing 3 meters during thunderstorms. The TMD has specifically recommended that all small boats in the upper Andaman Sea remain ashore from September 24 to 26 due to the dangerous conditions. The public is advised to monitor official updates from the TMD for the latest information.
