Massive Sinkhole Prompts Evacuations and Road Closures in Bangkok
BANGKOK – A massive sinkhole opened abruptly on a major thoroughfare in front of Vajira Hospital in Bangkok’s Dusit district early Wednesday morning, leading to the evacuation of nearby residents and significant disruptions to hospital services. The incident occurred on Samsen Road, a key traffic artery, and has resulted in extensive road closures in the vicinity.

The collapsed section of the roadway has created a cavernous void, with initial estimates placing its dimensions at approximately 30 meters wide, 30 meters long, and 50 meters deep. Although the ground continues to show signs of instability, authorities have confirmed that there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities. As a precautionary measure, patients from the hospital building closest to the sinkhole have been relocated to safer areas within the medical complex.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt arrived at the scene to personally oversee the emergency response. He attributed the cause of the collapse to construction work for the Purple Line train project, explaining that soil had flowed into the subway tunnel at the joint connecting the tunnel to the station. This movement occurred after the station’s ceiling was compromised, causing the ground above to subside. The area has been cordoned off, with traffic closed from the Vajira Hospital Intersection to the Sang Hi Intersection.

The sinkhole caused two electricity poles and a police tow truck to fall into the cavity. Utility agencies, including the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, are on-site assessing the damage and working on repairs. Residents of a nearby apartment building have been advised to evacuate temporarily due to safety concerns. In an official statement, Vajira Hospital’s Faculty of Medicine acknowledged the impact on its operations and assured the public that it is working to reschedule appointments for affected patients as quickly as possible.
