Family Rescued in Chiang Mai as Floods Worsen Across Northern Provinces
CHIANG MAI – A family of five, including a young child, was successfully rescued by emergency personnel last night after being trapped inside their heavily flooded home in Mae Rim district. The incident occurred as overflow from the Sa River inundated three villages in the area, prompting immediate intervention from district authorities.

Mae Rim district chief ordered rescue and relief teams to prioritize assisting vulnerable residents, particularly the elderly and children. While the flood situation in Mae Rim has shown signs of improvement today, no casualties have been reported from the district. Meanwhile, early this morning, waters from the Mae Chaem River began flooding residential areas in Chang Khoeng Subdistrict, a densely populated zone that houses government offices, educational institutions, and the district’s main commercial center. The flooding has also spread to agricultural areas in Tha Pha and Chang Khoeng subdistricts.
Mae Chaem District Chief Kriangsak Buntapuan has mobilized deputy district chiefs and officials to assist residents in moving belongings to higher ground and evacuating those at risk. Local administrative organizations have been coordinated to provide urgent assistance to affected communities. In Nan province, flash floods swept into Pha Tor sub-district of Tha Wang Pha district, forcing residents to urgently relocate their valuables. Mudslides were also reported in Santisuk, Bor Klua, and Tha Wang Pha districts, though damage assessments remain pending.

In Lom Sak district of Phetchabun, workers used a crane to install sandbags and reinforce floodwalls protecting the commercial area. A local furniture shop owner, Noppadol, noted that this is the district’s fourth flood this year, with sediment from previous floods still not fully cleared. Phayao provincial officials have issued warnings for residents in low-lying areas and near waterways to prepare for potential flooding influenced by Typhoon Ragasa.

The Meteorological Department forecasts isolated heavy rain over the next 24 hours for several provinces including Mae Hong Son, Tak, and Ubon Ratchathani, due to a monsoon trough and an active southwestern monsoon. Typhoon Ragasa is expected to weaken as it moves toward the Bay of Tonkin, making landfall in northern Vietnam tomorrow or Thursday before dissipating into a low-pressure system.
