Two dead and ‘multiple injured’ after car ploughs into crowd in the German city of Mannheim
A car has rammed into a crowd in the city of Mannheim, Germany, near the Galeria Kaufhof, and has left at least two dead and 25 injured, more than a dozen seriously. According to the newspaper Bild, the driver of the vehicle is German and has been arrested, while the authorities have already begun to investigate whether it is a new attack in the country.

According to images broadcast by NTV television, a large number of ambulances and police vehicles have cordoned off the scene. “At the moment there is a police operation in the city center of Mannheim, in the area of Wasserturm/Plankenkopf,” the police said in a statement.

The incident occurred between the emblematic Water Tower and Panken Street, one of the main arteries of the city and where a carnival street market is being held these days. Thus, given the high flow of images disseminated on social networks, the police have appealed to the population to avoid sharing videos of the scene and the operation in progress.

The city of Mannheim was the scene of a series of incidents last summer after a police officer was stabbed to death during a rally of the anti-Islamist Pax Europa movement. Days later a politician from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) was also attacked with a knife.
