Haze crisis in Northern Thailand remains severe

CHIANG RAI, 17 MARCH 2013 (NNT) – The smoke haze situation in the Northern Province of Mae Hong Son remains critical with the visibility at 1.5 kilometers. Meanwhile, the level of dust particles in Chiang Rai has exceeded the safety standard.

On Sunday, the level of dust particles in Muang and Mae Sai districts of Chiang Rai were measured at 125 and 121 micrograms per cubic meter, respectively. The safety standard is set at 120 micrograms per cubic meter.

Officials believe that agricultural burning activities have been continued by locals, resulting in a decrease of the visibility from 4 to 2 kilometers from the previous day.
