Thai Singer Zee Undergoes Surgery after Car Crash

On May 28, 2012, Thai pop singer Matanawee “Zee” Keenan was seriously injured in a traffic accident in central Bangkok, shocking fans and the entertainment industry. The accident occurred near the Ratchaprasong area, close to Wat Pathum Wanaram and the CentralWorld shopping complex, one of the busiest intersections in the city. Reports said Zee had been crossing the road in the morning on the way to make merit at the temple when a pickup truck struck the singer.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and rushed the then 23-year-old singer to Police General Hospital. Doctors later confirmed that Zee had suffered serious head trauma, bleeding in the skull, and a broken left clavicle. Due to the severity of the injuries, surgeons performed emergency cranial surgery to relieve pressure on the brain, followed by treatment for the fractured shoulder area. The singer was admitted to the intensive care unit, where medical staff closely monitored the condition.

News of the accident spread rapidly across Thailand, with fans expressing concern and sending messages of support. Zee, who had become well known for songs such as “Ngai Ngai Tae Ngao” and for a strong public image as a singer, model, and entertainer, had built a large following at the time. Many in the entertainment world publicly wished for a full recovery.

After several weeks of treatment, Zee was eventually discharged from the hospital. However, recovery was not immediate. In later interviews, Zee revealed that the accident left lingering emotional trauma and memory problems. The singer said crossing roads caused fear and anxiety after the crash, while short-term memory loss had become a worrying side effect of the brain injury. Zee explained that although the physical scars had healed, the mental effects remained challenging.

Despite the serious injuries, Zee returned to work and continued in the entertainment industry after rehabilitation. The accident became one of the most talked-about celebrity incidents in Thailand that year and highlighted both the dangers of Bangkok traffic and the long recovery process faced by victims of traumatic brain injuries.
