Thailand to Trial Seaplane Routes in Trang to Revolutionize Island Tourism

TRANG — Thailand is poised to launch trial seaplane services in Trang province later this year, aiming to transform tourism by connecting remote islands with major destinations like Bangkok and Phuket. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), in partnership with Siam Seaplane and Thai Seaplane, will initiate test flights from Koh Kradan—an island renowned for its crystal-clear waters and tranquil beaches.

CAAT’s Air Chief Marshal Manat Chavanaprayoon emphasized the project’s potential to unlock access to underserved islands while promoting sustainable tourism. Seaplanes will offer a faster and more scenic alternative to ferries, which are often disrupted during monsoon seasons. The initiative includes plans to build dedicated seaplane terminals with check-in facilities, developed in collaboration with environmental agencies to minimize ecological impact.

Beyond enhancing travel experiences, the scheme aims to stimulate local economies by directing tourists to lesser-visited areas, boosting demand for accommodations, dining, and services. It is also expected to create jobs in aviation, hospitality, and maintenance sectors.

If successful, the trials could position Thailand as a regional leader in innovative tourism, offering eco-friendly travel options that balance adventure with environmental stewardship. The project reflects a broader strategy to showcase the country’s diverse landscapes and cultural offerings to global travelers.
