Concrete Poured into Massive Bangkok Sinkhole as Vajira Hospital Reopens

BANGKOK – Authorities have entered the second day of stabilization work at the massive sinkhole near Vajira Hospital in Dusit district, where a combination of unstable soil and a damaged water pipe caused ground material to collapse into an adjacent subway construction tunnel. The ongoing operation aims to seal the rupture, prevent further erosion, and safely backfill the cavity.

Emergency Team Rescued After Risky Salvage Attempt in Bangkok Sinkhole

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported this morning that approximately 700 cubic meters of concrete were poured into the sinkhole overnight. Work was temporarily paused to allow the mixture to set and prevent additional material from flowing into the tunnel below. Governor Chadchart estimated that an additional 1,000 cubic meters of concrete will be needed to raise the fill level to the planned height. Final steps will involve constructing reinforced concrete walls, backfilling with crushed stone and sand, repairing damaged utilities, and repaving the road surface to meet the 14-day deadline for restoring traffic.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site late last night to inspect the emergency response efforts. The Prime Minister stated that the situation appeared stabilized following the initial concrete pour and emphasized that public safety remains the absolute priority, insisting that “risk must be zero percent.”

Despite the ongoing construction, Vajira Hospital resumed normal operations at its Outpatient Department (OPD) today after conducting comprehensive structural and utility safety inspections. In a related development, the incident has prompted an official review of the newly built Samsen Police Station, which sustained damage including broken foundation piles due to the subsidence. The National Police Chief is awaiting a full engineering assessment to determine whether the building will require demolition or repair.
