Emergency Team Rescued After Risky Salvage Attempt in Bangkok Sinkhole
BANGKOK – Two emergency workers narrowly escaped injury on Wednesday during a perilous attempt to salvage a vehicle from the massive sinkhole that opened on Samsen Road. The workers, from the city administration’s Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, had lowered themselves on ropes to the bottom of the 50-meter-deep cavity in an effort to retrieve a car trapped inside.

According to officials at the scene, the two men were in the process of securing a sling around the vehicle when the soft soil at the base of the sinkhole began to shift unexpectedly. The sudden ground movement forced them to abort the operation immediately and call for assistance. Their colleagues quickly pulled them to safety using the ropes. Despite the hazardous conditions, the team has not ruled out making another salvage attempt once the situation stabilizes.

Nitarn Chuenchanokphibul, a volunteer from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation, reported that a white sedan was found abandoned at the edge of the sinkhole. However, a pickup truck belonging to the Samsen police station, which is also believed to have fallen into the cavity, has not yet been located. Nitarn suggested that the police vehicle may have sunk deeper into the hole and remains out of sight. Recovery efforts continue as authorities assess the stability of the site.
