Four Drug Smugglers Killed in Chiang Mai Shootout

CHIANG MAI, Thailand — A deadly shootout erupted in the early hours of the morning in Chiang Mai’s Fang district, leaving four suspected drug smugglers dead and resulting in the seizure of a massive haul of methamphetamine. The clash occurred near Ban Khop Dong, a remote area situated along the Thai-Myanmar border, where troops from the Chaiyanuphap Task Force were conducting a routine patrol.

The confrontation began when soldiers spotted a group of six to eight armed individuals moving through the area in a caravan formation, each carrying large backpacks. As the soldiers attempted to intercept the group by signaling them to stop, the suspects responded by opening fire, sparking a fierce exchange that lasted approximately ten minutes. The gunfire pierced the forested silence of the border zone before the remaining assailants fled into the surrounding terrain.

In the aftermath, troops from the Pha Mueang Force conducted a thorough sweep of the area. The search confirmed the deaths of four suspected smugglers at the scene. Alongside the bodies, authorities discovered approximately 400,000 methamphetamine pills packed in the smugglers’ abandoned backpacks — a clear indication of the group’s role in the ongoing cross-border narcotics trade.

Officials have not released the identities of the deceased, and it remains unclear if any of the fleeing suspects sustained injuries. Security has since been heightened in the region as authorities continue efforts to suppress drug trafficking networks operating along the porous northern border.
